Emirates has officially banned power bank use on flights starting October 1, 2025. The airline announced that passengers can still carry one power bank of up to 100Wh in their cabin baggage, but it must remain switched off throughout the flight. This decision follows a detailed safety review after rising incidents involving lithium battery-related risks in aviation.

Why the power bank ban was enforced

According to Emirates, the growing reliance on power banks has contributed to a noticeable increase in onboard safety incidents. Lithium-ion batteries inside these devices pose risks of overheating, fire, or malfunction, which can jeopardize passenger safety. By banning their use, the airline aims to minimize such threats.

What passengers need to know

  • Each traveller can carry only one power bank, with a maximum capacity of 100 watt-hours.
  • Power banks cannot be used to charge mobile phones, tablets, or laptops during the flight.
  • They must remain switched off and cannot be recharged using in-seat power outlets.
  • All power banks need a visible capacity label.
  • Storage is limited to under the seat or in the seat pocket—placing them in overhead bins is restricted.

Emirates’ onboard alternatives

While the airline restricts power bank use, Emirates assures passengers that its aircraft are equipped with built-in charging ports. However, travelers are strongly advised to fully charge their devices and power banks before leaving home, particularly for long-haul journeys.

Global power bank travel rules

The move aligns with global aviation guidelines, though Emirates has enforced stricter rules than some authorities.

  • FAA, TSA, CAA, and IATA require power banks to be carried in cabin luggage, not checked baggage.
  • Generally, power banks under 100Wh are allowed without approval.
  • Larger ones up to 160Wh may be permitted with prior approval.
  • Batteries exceeding 160Wh are strictly prohibited.

Passengers planning to travel with Emirates should ensure their devices comply with the updated rules and remain prepared to keep gadgets charged via alternative options.
