Pune Airport Expansion: 300-Acre Land Acquisition Planned for Runway Extension and New MRO Facility
The Maharashtra government has submitted a detailed proposal to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation for the Pune Airport expansion, a major infrastructure project that aims to enhance capacity and connectivity. The expansion plan involves the acquisition of over 300 acres of land to extend the existing runway, create additional parking bays, and build a new terminal for private aircraft and helicopters.
Officials confirmed that since Pune Airport operates under the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the proposal will also be forwarded to the MoD for approval before any land acquisition begins. Once the necessary permissions are secured, the process of acquiring both public and privately-owned land is expected to start.
According to Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, “The Pune Airport needs over 300 acres for expansion, and the proposal has now been submitted to the Centre. The plan includes a general aviation terminal and an MRO facility.”
The proposed Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility is expected to be a key addition, allowing commercial aircraft to undergo maintenance at Pune itself, thereby reducing the dependency on other cities. This would not only save time and operational costs but also position Pune as a growing aviation hub in western India.
With the steady rise in private helicopter and charter flight operations, the upcoming general aviation terminal will make flight movements smoother and more efficient. Furthermore, the extended runway will enable larger aircraft to operate from Pune Airport, improving domestic and international connectivity.
Once completed, the Pune Airport expansion will significantly improve infrastructure, attract new routes, and boost regional economic growth through better air connectivity and aviation services.
