Mumbai: Commuters using the busy Ghodbunder Highway may soon get relief as the Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has confirmed that the long-pending works on this crucial route are expected to be finished by January 2026. Once completed, the upgraded highway will ensure faster and safer travel between Mumbai, Thane, and several major destinations including Gujarat, North Maharashtra, Navi Mumbai, and the Konkan region.

Currently, the Ghodbunder Highway, which serves as a vital link between Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs through Thane, is witnessing extensive construction activity. The ongoing works have led to lane closures and heavy congestion, especially within Thane city limits. Service roads on both sides are being merged into the main stretch and concretised, which has been causing frequent traffic jams.

Last month, commuters faced severe snarls on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Highway, leaving school buses and cars stuck for hours. Authorities hope the completion of the Ghodbunder Highway upgrade will ease such traffic chaos in the future.

According to Sarnaik, the ongoing development includes resurfacing at the Gaimukh Ghat section, widening of service lanes, laying of new water pipelines, and shifting of electrical lines. He added that the traffic police and Public Works Department (PWD) are coordinating to manage resurfacing work and flyover repairs to avoid major disruption.

Once the project is finished, the upgraded stretch will be handed over to the Thane Municipal Corporation for long-term maintenance and management.

Apart from the highway, the minister said that several civic infrastructure projects across Thane are also being fast-tracked. These include:

  • Beautification of the Nagla Bandar Creek and Mangrove Park
  • Renovation of the Upvan swimming pool and Balasaheb Thackeray Art Gallery
  • Upgrades to Anandibai Joshi Hospital, public gardens, markets, and sports complexes
  • Development of the Lata Mangeshkar Music School

Sarnaik assured that once the Ghodbunder Highway project is complete, residents and daily commuters can expect smoother drives and reduced travel time between Mumbai and its surrounding regions.
