Vande Bharat Sleeper Hits 180 Kmph: Viral Water Test Proves Stability of India’s New Rail Icon
In a historic leap for Indian Railways, the indigenously developed Vande Bharat Sleeper prototype has successfully completed its high-speed trials, touching a peak speed of 180 kmph. The milestone, achieved on the Kota-Nagda section under the West Central Railway, marks a final technical hurdle cleared before the train begins transforming overnight travel in India.
The ‘Water Test’ That Stunned the Internet
The highlight of the trial wasn’t just the speedometer hitting 180 kmph, but the remarkable stability of the rake. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared a viral video from inside the coach where glasses filled to the brim with water remained perfectly steady.
Even as the train sped through the Rajasthan-Madhya Pradesh border, not a single drop was spilled. This “water test” serves as a visual testament to the train’s advanced oscillation and vibration control, outclassing the existing Rajdhani and Duronto fleets.

Phase 3 Technical Milestone: CRS Oversight
The trial was conducted under the stringent supervision of the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Janak Kumar Garg. This certification process is critical as it validates:
- Braking Performance: Emergency braking systems tested at peak velocities.
- Ride Quality: Evaluation of the new suspension system designed for “jerk-free” movement.
- Safety Systems: Real-world testing of the KAVACH anti-collision technology.
How Vande Bharat Sleeper Outperforms Rajdhani Express
While the Rajdhani has been the gold standard for overnight travel for decades, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is engineered for the future. Unlike the locomotive-hauled Rajdhani, this is a self-propelled train set with distributed power. This allows for faster acceleration and deceleration, significantly cutting down travel time on busy corridors like Delhi-Howrah and Delhi-Mumbai.
Luxury Meets Engineering: Key Features
The 16-coach prototype, manufactured by BEML in collaboration with ICF, is a masterpiece of “Atmanirbhar Bharat.”
- Cabin Configuration: 11 AC 3-Tier, 4 AC 2-Tier, and 1 AC First Class coach.
- First-in-Class Amenities: For the first time in Indian rail history, First Class passengers will have access to hot water shower cubicles.
- Ergonomic Design: Redesigned ladders for easier access to upper berths and extra-cushioned seating for a premium sleep experience.
- Safety & Hygiene: Bio-vacuum toilets (aircraft-style), aerosol-based fire suppression, and fully sealed gangways for a dust-free, silent environment.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Launch Date: What We Know
With the 180 kmph trials successful, Indian Railways is expected to announce the commercial rollout in late January or early February 2026. Initial reports suggest the first service may connect Delhi to Kolkata (Howrah) or Delhi to Patna, potentially reducing travel time by up to two hours.
