New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released its monthly weather outlook for May 2026. The department predicts a contradictory weather pattern featuring above-normal rainfall alongside persistent heatwaves in specific regions. While maximum temperatures are expected to remain normal to below normal across most of the country, certain pockets will face severe heat stress.

Key Highlights of the May 2026 Outlook

The latest bulletin from the weather department highlights a shift in early-season weather conditions, bringing a mixture of cooling showers and localized heatwaves.

Temperature Trends and Anomalies

The broader temperature profile shows a relatively milder May compared to previous years due to evolving neutral ENSO conditions transitioning toward an El Niño pattern.

  • Maximum Temperatures: Temperatures are likely to remain normal or below normal across vast expanses of the country. However, parts of northwest India, the northeast, and the southern peninsula will experience above-normal daytime temperatures.
  • Minimum Temperatures: Nighttime temperatures are expected to stay warmer than normal across the majority of the regions, leading to persistent discomfort during late evenings and early mornings.

Heatwave Vulnerability

Despite the moderated overall daytime temperatures, specific zones will experience above-average heatwave days.

“Heatwave days are highly likely to be more frequent than usual across the eastern coast, parts of the Himalayan foothills, and the western states of Maharashtra and Gujarat,” stated IMD Director-General of Meteorology, Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.

Rainfall Projections

India is set to experience an unusually wet start to the pre-monsoon period.

  • Nationwide Average: Rainfall is projected to exceed 110% of the Long Period Average (LPA).
  • Regional Variations: While the northern and central plains will receive ample showers, pockets of east and northeast India, as well as east-central regions, might see below-normal precipitation.
  • Monsoon Onset: The southwest monsoon is expected to make its initial appearance over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands between May 14 and May 16, 2026.

Safety and Preparedness

With heatwave conditions overlapping with the pre-monsoon rains, the IMD and health authorities have issued advisories to minimize health risks.

Guidelines from Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra

The IMD Chief has advised the public and state authorities to remain vigilant. Key recommendations include:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, such as water, ORS, or buttermilk, even if not feeling thirsty.
  • Avoid Peak Sun: Limit outdoor activities, especially between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
  • Protective Gear: Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting cotton clothing. Use umbrellas or hats when stepping outdoors.
